Mr. Stein is the Chairman of FSI Group, LLC. He is also a founder of FSI and serves as co-portfolio manager of FSI’s long/short equity hedge fund and private equity strategies. Mr. Stein served as a director on various public and private bank boards from 1989-2009, and is a founder of Trapeza Capital Management, LLC, a provider of capital to community-based financial institutions. Prior to founding FSI, Mr. Stein was a founder and President of the Belvedere Corporation, a developer and manager of commercial real estate properties and hotels. Prior to Belvedere, Mr. Stein was a Partner at Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP, an Ohio-based law firm.
Mr. Stein received his J.D., magna cum laude, from the Harvard Law School in 1978 and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, summa cum laude, from Williams College in 1975.
John Stein, CFA
Mr. Stein is the President of FSI Group, LLC. He is also a founder of FSI and serves as co-portfolio manager of FSI’s long/short equity hedge fund and private equity strategies. Mr. Stein served as a director on various public and private bank boards from 1998 through 2010, and is a founder of Trapeza Capital Management, LLC, a provider of capital to community-based financial institutions. Prior to founding FSI, Mr. Stein served as a Vice President and Portfolio Manager in the Market Risk Analytics Group of Bankers Trust Company, and as a Commercial and Investment Banking Consultant in the Financial Services Strategy practice of The MAC Group/Gemini Consulting.
Mr. Stein received his Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy from the University of Chicago in 1988. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
Charles F. Croog
General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer
Mr. Croog joined FSI Group in 1998 and is responsible for transaction structure and execution as well as regulatory and corporate compliance. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Croog practiced corporate and securities law with Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP.
Mr. Croog received his Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Yale College in 1990 and his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1994.
Campbell Chaney, CFA
Mr. Chaney joined FSI Group West in 2007. Based in San Francisco, he focuses on private equity transactions in the western United States. Previously, Mr. Chaney was employed by Sanders Morris Harris. As a Senior Vice President, he was responsible for equity research coverage of western banks, specialty finance, and capital markets companies. Prior to 2002, he was Managing Director and Director of Research at Sutro & Co. before its acquisition by Dain Rauscher. Mr. Chaney has spent over 20 years researching banks and thrifts located throughout the western United States. From 1985-1989, Mr. Chaney was a bank examiner with the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco where he performed on-site safety and soundness examinations of major West Coast bank holding companies and their subsidiaries. In May 2004, Mr. Chaney was named to the Wall Street Journal’s, “Best on the Street” poll as a top stock picker in the commercial banks and S&L’s category.
Mr. Chaney received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Principia College in Illinois and an MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Arizona. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the Security Analysts Society of San Francisco and the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts.
Blaise Hils, CMT
Mr. Hils joined FSI Group in 1996 and is responsible for the firm’s trading operations, including trade execution, reporting, analysis, and systems management. Mr. Hils oversees brokered transactions as well as trading over electronic communications networks.
Mr. Hils received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Thomas More College in 1989. He is a Chartered Market Technician.
Mark Fleming, CFA
Mr. Fleming joined FSI Group in 2013 as a Vice President focusing on equity investments. He was formerly a Portfolio Manager/Analyst for Fifth Third Bank. At Fifth Third, Mr. Fleming was a member of the bank’s tactical asset allocation committee, managed a global real estate strategy and worked as an analyst covering financials, telecom and energy. Prior to becoming an analyst, he traded global equities and equity linked derivatives for Fifth Third. Prior to joining Fifth Third, Mr. Fleming worked as an investor services representative for JPMorgan Asset Management.
Mr. Fleming received his Bachelor of Business Administration concentrating in Finance and a Bachelor of Science in Economics, both from Western Michigan University in 2005. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and designated Financial Risk Manager.
Mr. Stein joined FSI Group in 2003. Mr. Stein has served in various analytical and strategic roles at FSI and its affiliated asset management businesses, most recently as Managing Director responsible for public and privately traded equity investments and strategy. Mr. Stein began his career in the Financial Institutions Group of the Mergers, Acquisitions & Restructuring Department of Morgan Stanley & Co. in New York City.
Mr. Stein received his Bachelor of Arts in History from Williams College in 2002.
Mr. Young joined FSI Group in 2007 as a Vice President and focuses on public debt and equity investments for FSI Group. He was formerly a Municipal Bond Analyst and Corporate Credit Analyst for the Ohio Casualty Insurance Company. At Ohio Casualty, Mr. Young was responsible for trading and providing credit research for the $1.4 billion municipal portfolio and $1.5 billion corporate credit portfolio.
Mr. Young received his Bachelor of Science in Finance from the Miami University in 1999.
Mr. Reevey joined FSI Group in 2007 as a Managing Director, primarily focusing on the private equity side of the firm. He has approximately twenty-two years of experience as a senior equity analyst and senior investment banker focusing on U.S. based banks and thrifts. Previously, Mr. Reevey served as First Vice President, Senior Equity Analyst at Ryan Beck & Co., where he successfully led the equity research coverage of over twenty small and mid-cap banks and thrifts located in the Midwest. In May 2007, The Wall Street Journal recognized Mr. Reevey as one of top five thrift analysts on Wall Street in their “Best on The Street Poll” based on the performance of his stock recommendations. Earlier in his career he was affiliated with Putnam Lovell NBF, Sterling Financial, Advest, Inc. and Merrill Lynch, Inc.
Mr. Reevey received an MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1992 and a Bachelor of Science from New York University’s Stern School of Business in 1987. He currently serves on the boards of Cincinnati State Technical and Community College Foundation, the Clifton Cultural Arts Center, the Cincinnati Ballet, and the Partnership For Innovation in Education (P.I.E).
John Penote, CPA
CPA, Chief Financial Officer, Head of Risk/Operations
Mr. Penote joined FSI Group in 2002 and has primary responsibility for risk management, internal accounting, finance operations, and investor reporting. Prior to joining FSI Group, he was an Accountant in the assurance and business advisory practice at Arthur Andersen LLP.
Mr. Penote received his Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Xavier University in 1995. He has been a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Ohio since 1998.
Ms. Obbie joined FSI Group in 2006 as an Accounts Payable and Financial Reporting Accountant. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Obbie was employed in the Finance Division at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of the Rochester Area.
Ms. Taylor joined FSI Group in 2011 as a Financial Reporting Accountant and has primary responsibility for day-to-day hedge fund reporting and reconciliation. Prior to joining FSI Group, she was an Accountant at Healthcare Waste Solutions and prior to that worked in various areas of commercial leasing at PNC Bank.
Ms. Taylor received her Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Georgia State University in 1994.
Ms. Stanton joined FSI Group in 2006. She graduated, cum laude, in 2007 from the University of Cincinnati with a B.A. in Organizational Leadership. Prior to joining FSI Group, Ms. Stanton was employed by Mercy Health Partners.
Managing Director, Marketing & Investor Relations
Mr. Preston joined FSI Group in 2011 and is responsible for firm’s sales and marketing efforts. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Preston was a Managing Director with Cole Partners for ten years where he managed the marketing and sales efforts for a variety of hedge fund managers. Prior to Cole Partners, Mr. Preston held positions as a proprietary derivatives trader and programmer, a senior financial consultant and a fixed income trader. Mark began his career on the Treasury Bond futures desk for Cargill Investor Services at the Chicago Board of Trade.
Mr. Preston received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and Marketing from the University of Wisconsin.
Ms. Stanfield joined FSI Group in 1997. She is Executive Assistant to Steven Stein and John Stein. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Stanfield was employed in the Midwest Payment Systems division of Fifth Third Bancorp.
